To celebrate the anniversary of his adoption, Reuben is issuing a challenge.

... write a story of any length using these words
adoption
anniversary
lap
meeting
first
brother

Mama’s milk is warm, and every sip of it leaves me content. Her purrs rock me to sleep, and her gentle nudges tell me when to wake. A pile of small soft gingers cling to her fur. I follow her everywhere, in this place she calls home.

My dreams take me far away, to a cat who wants to play, and another who longs for comfort. Mama tells me that dreams are real, and so are goodbyes. She meows that I'm her little ball of light, the goodness in her heart. Strong hands lift me away, as I take one last look at her sweet amber eyes, tears dripping from my own.

This place is new, and doesn’t smell like home. But a kind lady lifts me up, and places me in her lap. I search her face, and mama is staring back at me. She gently places me down, and waits as I go to a meeting that’s already happened in my dreams.

A first sniff, a simple nose nudge, a comforting meow. New brothers greet me, tell me their stories. I will be here a long time, always ready to listen.

New mama says I’m adopted, that a year has passed. Anniversary tuna sits on my plate, surrounded by a circle of treats, and a circle of friends.

[personal profile] lindahoyland and Reuben's challenge from Aug 5th.

Write a story of any length and include these 6 words

Blackberries
Ducks
Fairy
Pond
Butterfly
Bird

The air breathes its sweet moisture on the blackberries, waking them from their slumber. It’s time for the blackberry fairy to arrive, and they must be awake for the occasion! Ducks paddle their little legs eagerly, racing across the pond, hoping to catch a glimpse of her. Birds and butterflies circle the bushes, stirring up some sparkle to dust on her wings.

Threads of light appear, very faint at first, but growing ever stronger. Blinking into their world, they watch as she lands gracefully.

She sings them a song never before heard…

Berries dark and deep,
kinder than the dearest heart,
and twice as sweet.
First blackberry
lifts its head,
sings its song,
keeps us fed.
Last blackberry
tells its tales,
never leaves,
never fails.

Write a story of any length including these words,

Independence
Flag
Stars
Stripes
Banner
Fireworks
Eagle.

A thousand years ago in the land of independence, she sings her first song, sends her first fireworks to the sky, cries her first tears for the fallen. Today, she flies with eagle wings, but her heart belongs to the dove. She lands on holy ground, the place of peace where soldiers never have to die. Stripes no longer bleed red, and the stars of her flag are no longer bound to the cloth that gave it birth. A banner of hope, it blesses the land with an eternal smile that shines from the heavens.

For Reuben and [personal profile] lindahoyland's Solstice Writing Challenge, I did the bonus part, too. :)

Write a story of any length or topic including these 6 words.

sun
ritual
long
day
summer
heat

Bonus Challenge - Write a story based on/inspired by the banner picture.

Her steps are soft on the summer grass. Paws wet with dew, she walks the same path as her ancestors. Ancient meows fill the air with the sweet scent of a musical perfume. She feels the warmth of a different sun... one that rose so long ago. Two white flowers bask in its heat, the first ones to live and grow under its care. Kitty circles them three times, gently rubbing her nose on the petals, completing the ritual. A long kept secret drops its veil, as the First Cat rises in the sky, beaming down its sweet, sleepy rays. Kitty bows and purrs, safe in the loving light that surrounds her on this perfect day.

[personal profile] lindahoyland and Reuben's challenge from June 12.

Write a story of any length or topic including these 6 words.

Pottery
Cold
Natural
Clothing
Steps
Wistful

The old woman’s face is creased with seams, like broken pottery glued together. Her clothing is a polite shade of brown, the same color as the well-mannered bushes that grow on her lawn. Each step is cautious, carefully measured, and endlessly precise. The natural world calls to her, but she is too cold to care. Ice grows on her fingers instead of nails, and frost forms an endless shell the sun can’t melt.

Mornings bring wistful thoughts...memories of warmth and wonder, a distant thing faded in time. Evenings bring the rains… the steady patter of hope, waiting for her to thaw.

[personal profile] lindahoyland's and Reuben's challenge from May 21.

Write a story of any length or topic including these 6 words.

Smile
white
sunbeams
arm
roses
clock

Roses don’t need a clock to tell time. All they need is the steady pulse of a sunbeam, the tick and tock of light kissing their petals. The sun smiles wider every minute, urging them to grow.

Day and night swings like the steady arm of a pendulum, rocking the roses back and forth, until one day, everything fades to white.

I'd like to give this a try. :)

[personal profile] lindahoyland has posted a new challenge. Include these 6 words in a story of any length:

kitten
mother
box
food
orange
baby

 photo 387356_original_zps4um3pvo5.jpg

The baby kitten colors her dreams orange. She craves warm, sunny things. Safe in her box, she purrs her contentment to a sun that never sets. Mother cat stays at her side, weaving tales about the big, bright globe that sails through the sky. Night comes, but light continues to pour through the curtains, making the food in their dinner bowls glow.
